Tips For Writing 'chicklit'

The everyday adventures of "chicklit" heroines Carrie Bradshaw and Bridget Jones are hilarious and recognizable. The story lines are simple, the tone is light. Still, writing "chicklit" is harder than you think.

It is true that women have an inherent advantage for writing this genre, although this doesn’t mean it is that easy: writing an intriguing funny story is just not that simple.

"Chicklit" is about every day recognizable situations. Feel free to write everything down that comes up in you whilst writing. Deleting is something for later, you can’t delete in your head.

Exaggerate
Mostly you tend to describe situations from a certain distance. For writing a "chicklit" is it best to really use all your senses. Don’t be inhibited. Exaggerate. You have to enlarge things to make them interesting.

Determined Heroine
A "chicklit" heroine is never perfect. It are the small flaws that make her so recognizable. It is important to make a resolute choice for certain characteristics. No wavering heroine of sometimes and a little. This is also easier for you as a writer. You always keep grip for the rest of your story.
If the heroine has taken shape, be careful you write everything from her point of view. You should ask yourself as an author questions constantly.

The One
Just like in every other story the main character of a chicklit has one main goal. What does the main character want to achieve? In chicklit there is always that one man.

Definition Chicklit:
Originally a slightly condescending term for the form of contemporary romantic fiction reading which is in first instance meant for women between 20 and 30 years of age. Chicklit is an abbreviation of chick literature
