The clear line

Jorge Arnanz

Short description

It seems that the basic characteristics of the clear line are initially linked to the restrictions imposed by the printing techniques in infantile magazines. In fact, the graphic method chosen for the clear line is already applied to the design of Windows due to technique limitations. We can say that the clear line has its roots in the beginnings of the comics, and it is not surprising to find elements in Christophe’s works (le sapeur camember in 1896) or in Pinchon (Becassine). But it is likely the influence of Alain Saint-Ogan (Zig and Puce) found with more clarity in the design of Hergé’s comics. In North America, the drawing style of Windsor McCay ("Little Nemo" in 1905) is also in the same origin.
This book tries to offer knowledge of the most important authors that have used this graphic style in their creations.
