Cultural Politics in Europe and Intercultural Dialogue in the EUCharlotte De KockShort descriptionThis work explores the discrepancy between identity politics in European countries and the cultural policies of the European Union. It uncovers how European cultural policy tackles the growth of xenophobic and intolerant national politics and how the former policy could be enhanced. Special attention goes out to the notion of culture from a philosophical, anthropological and political point of view, as well as to the political nature of the EU, the mechanism of subsidiarity and the outcomes of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue (2008). Author BioCharlotte De Kock (°1986) graduated in African Studies (Uni. of Gent, BE) and obtained a master in Cultural Studies (Uni. of Lisbon, PT). She works as a tour guide, translator and Dutch teacher and is involved in the E-planning consortium (Technical Uni. of Lisbon). In July 2010 she’ll be cooperating in the project How Different is Different at HoGent, BE. Having obtained a minor in political sciences she combines anthropological and political viewpoints in her study of the EU’s cultural arena. |
